So you’ve decided to take in a game of backgammon. But how knowledgeable are you about this centuries-old challenge, one of the world’s oldest board games (or “tables”)? Backgammon tables and other games have long been enjoyed worldwide, by all members of the community.

Backgammon can be played on a backgammon board or backgammon table with two rows of 12 markings, known as “points.” With backgammon tables and other related varieties, participants roll dice to determine the number of spaces they can move their pieces (also known as “stones” or “disks”).

Backgammon Tables: The Game in Profile
Basically, backgammon is a board game which is set up as an obstacle race. Each backgammon player attempts to move their army of 15 pieces (known as “stones”) around the backgammon board, which is divided into 24 dagger-like divisions (or “points”). The roll of the dice determines the number of spaces you can move.

With backgammon tables, the players’ goal is to bring all of their stones home, before their opponent can do the same. All the while, you’re encouraged to hit and block each other’s checkers. Think of a backgammon table game as civilized warfare, much like a centuries-old “Risk.” Here are some distinguishing characteristics and guidelines of the typical backgammon table game:

  • Each backgammon board features four backgammon table sections
  • These sections, in turn, contain six narrow wedges (or “points”), each sporting two alternating colors
  • One side is identified by 15 white stones; the opposing side is identified by 15 black stones
  • Stones are moved from point to point, in opposite directions; the amount of spaces moved is based on the dices’ roll
  • The backgammon players’ goal is to ensure that all 15 of their stones are safe in their “home” (inner) table
  • Once all stones are safe at home, players can start moving them to an imaginary point off the backgammon board’s edge; this is known as “bearing off.”
  • The winner is the first player to bear off all 15 stones.
